API SCHOLARSHIP RULES AND GUIDELINES

The following rules and guidelines, revised in September 26, 2005 were approved by the Victoria Chapter, American Petroleum Institute (API) Executive Board on September, 2005.

THE MISSION OF THE VICTORIA CHAPTER SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM IS TO FOSTER A CONTINUING SUPPLY OF QUALIFIED PROFESSIONALS FOR THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY.

A minimum of Fifteen (15) scholarships each Fall and Spring semester are to be awarded out of the Scholarship Fund. The Amount of the Scholarship fund shall be determined by available funds less reserves as determined by the Executive Board on or before August 31st of each year. The executive board will exercise its best effort to provide a minimum of $10,000 for the Scholarship Fund. The quantity of scholarships may be reduced for the following reasons: (a) The number of qualified applicants is less than fifteen, or (b) the resulting award would be less than $250.00. The maximum award amount is $2,500 per semester. Award amounts are subject to change due to funds availability. Scholarships will be funded prior to October 15th for the Fall semester and prior to February 15th for the Spring semester. Each recipient is limited to a maximum of 8 semester scholarships for undergraduate study.

CONSIDERATIONS:

1)

Preferential consideration is to be given to students entering or pursuing a Major Course of study toward a career in the Petroleum Industry, i.e.: Petroleum Engineering, Geophysics, Geology. Applicants pursuing other courses of study will receive consideration should there be an insufficient number of otherwise qualified applicants.

2)

Favorable consideration will be given to relatives of active Victoria Chapter members. All applicants are required to submit a letter of recommendation from a member of the Victoria Chapter before they will be considered.

3)

Past semester grades from either high school or college relative to all applicants.

4)

Scholastic Recognition / Community Service

5)

Extra Curricular Activities

6)

Work / Study status

REQUIREMENTS:

1.

Students must be enrolled full time, 12 hours minimum per semester being applied for. Scholarship Recipients that fail to complete 12hrs are disqualified for the following scholarship semester. Courses from multiple schools may be combined additively, but applicants must submit an explanation regarding how it will affect their course of study.

2.

Recipients of scholarships must maintain a 2.50 grade point average (GPA) or better for the last semester. Summer Session grades may be considered for determination of the previous semester GPA, but only if a minimum of 6 credit hours of core curriculum courses were taken each session, 12hrs total. Applicants that split their classes between multiple schools must submit transcripts from each school and provide the combined GPA for the scholarship committee review.

3.

Students must furnish copies of transcripts and next semester's schedule postmarked no later than September 15 for Fall and January 15 for Spring semester to qualify for the subsequent scholarship payment.

4.

Recipients of Fall Semester awards are only required to submit their otherwise qualifying Fall semester transcript and Spring course schedule to receive the subsequent Spring semester award.

5.

A new application is required for the Fall Semester in all cases. Previous recipients applying for renewal are not guaranteed to receive the scholarship due to the fact that the Victoria API Scholarship Committee will be receiving new applications every semester based on the above requirements.

EXTENDED BENEFITS:

At the end of a student's four year (4) scholarship, benefits may be extended if there are not enough qualified applicants to receive the quota of scholarships for that year. Should there be more students applying for extended benefits than openings are available, the Scholarship Committee will determine who will receive the extended benefits.

NOTES:

THE API AND THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE API RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CHANGE AND AMEND ALL RULES AND GUIDELINES AT ANY TIME THAT IT DEEMS NECESSARY.

When you submit your application, be sure to include copies of your previous semester transcript, current semester schedule, and a letter of recommendation. Do not submit these documents separately.
